The 2012 Audi R8 is among the most versatile and appealing supercars for at least three reasons. It’s easy to drive. It has precise steering, good visibility and a comfortable interior, traits not always found in more exotic supercars. And, among its elite brethren in the exotic car segment, it’s likely the best choice as a daily driver.
You can drive the Audi R8, a 2-door coupe, with near-instant confidence. Yes, it has 460 horsepower and its 4.2-liter V8 advances quickly, with the 0-60 mph standard accomplished in 4.2 seconds. But it drives effortlessly despite its commendable specs. Its confidence and lack of a learning curve are further helped by Audi’s efficient all-wheel drive system, Quattro. The R8 is responsive and downshifting is rarely needed. The R8 also utilizes an electronic differential lock (EDL) and uses speed-dependent electromechanical power steering.
With the familiar personality of a sports car, the Audi R8 offers its driver a low and wide platform with a forward cabin to leave plenty of room for the rear-mounted engine. The fabric power-folded convertible top can open or close in 19 seconds, and it also operates, unlike many convertibles, while the car accelerates to as fast as 31 mph. The top folds with impressive precision and is protected by a carbon fiber cover.
Driving the Audi R8 is also an exercise in luxury. The interior is posh, with leather everywhere as well as other top-grade materials such as Alcantara. Audi also understands that supercar enthusiasts are engine fanatics and believes that’s a good thing. As such, the V8 engine is mounted under a glass panel instead of a metal hood. It can be stared at and admired obsessively if desired.
After I drove the Tesla, which was awesome, I decided to test drive the R8 – and wow!! Loved it!
